Media Ratings: Anomalies, Assertions, and Oddest Metric Formulations of 2022

Several claims about streaming superiority, listed chronologically as:

2022-07

Obi-Wan Kenobi, “Rack up Huge Premiere Audiences“. Nielsen data, again with this. The metric? Week of May 23rd, “5.1 billion minutes for Stranger Things all episodes versus “1 billion minutes” for the first two episodes. Which is good, because only The Mandalorian (which season, episodes?) and Loki also crossed the billion the first week. Suggestion is that it’s the first week that matters, which is Ye Olde Nielsen +7 Day ratings methodology, from cable/broadcast. And then, by the end of season one, “Obi-Wan Finale Breaks Star Wars Viewership Record.” Deadline with data from Samba TV. The metric? “3M US terrestrial TV households who’ve watched a show for at least five minutes.” There are +4 Day ratings of 1.8M (and 2.14 +4 Day for episode 101), higher than the Boba Fett finale 1.5M (first episode 1.5M). For reference, Mando S02E01 was 2.08M. Again, this is only USA.

Stranger Things, Re: Ruling 2022 Streaming Charts says Nielsen, (deadline, variety, engadet). The metric? 52 billion “viewing minutes.” Billion, Quadrillion, assuming all episodes.

House of the Dragon 110 (907M minutes week finale -2, 921 M minutes week finale -1) but “(The HBO Max figure doesn’t include any linear or on-demand viewing from HBO’s cable channels.)”

Rings of Power 108 (966M minutes finale -2, 988M minutes of watch time week finale -1) for a total series watch time of (6.38 billion minutes) “to become Prime Video’s biggest series to date in the Nielsen rankings.”
